I encountered a few problems while making this cake...the first being , this is not the season of oranges here , then the second problem was self raising flour.. as it is not easily available here and what is available is too costly.
I have modified the recipe with the things that were readily available and some substitutes.
Here is my version of the cake.
Ingredients
Self raising flour - 175g
White butter-175g
Caster sugar-175g
eggs-3
orange essence-2tsp
milk-2tbsp
Orange Syrup:
Orange Syrup:
orange juice-3/4cup (I used the tetrapak version)
sugar-6-7tsp
For the topping:
Dark Chocolate-50g
Silver sprinkles
Method
Method
- In a mixing bowl add the butter and sugar and beat till light and fluffy.
- Add eggs one by one and beat.
- Add orange essence .
- Add flour and milk and fold.
- Bake for 35-45 mins.
- Cool and make holes on the top of the cake.
- Mix the orange juice and sugar ,heat and bring it to a boil.
- Put this juice on the top of the cake.
- Melt the chocolate on a double boiler and spread it on the top of the cake , spread some sprinkles.

Cake looks amazing, i love chocolate and orange combination!
Hi Pari, your cake looks amazing and adding orange essence is a great substitute - sorry fresh oranges were not available.
*This may help re-self-raising flour, for every 100g (4 oz) of plain flour add 1 tsp of baking powder as a rule*.
Thanks for taking part in this month's S&SB event and I hope you will partake in next month's bake :0)
Best wishes Rosie x

Thanks dear.
Wow, that cake looks really delicious.
the cake looks delicious. orange essence is a great substitute but you're right, the zest adds a whole new dimension.
Well your cake looks like it came out an absolute treat despite the hurdles with ingredients you had to face! It looks really yummy :)
Yes! You do make it again when oranges are in season, it's well worth it. The zest in the cake really was a lovely touch adding both flavour and texture.
your cake looks wonderful as well.. :)

That is a bit of a hurdle - not having the oranges!! So glad that you found the orange essence though.

Love your cake. You can never go wrong with chocolate and orange combination. I have in the past used essence and it turns out great. I feel like making more of this cake now.

The cake looks awesome. Couple of questions though - did you use a loaf pan to bake this cake? At what temperature and for how long did you bake it?
